Kollywood - Nepalese Film Industry

We all have heard about Hollywood and Bollywood which is referred to the famous English and Hindi film industry likewise Nepali cinema is often categorized as “Kollywood”. The name kollywood was given to Nepali cinema after the capital city and center of Nepali film industry Kathmandu. Unlike Hollywood and Bollywood, kollywood is not much established in global platform however the impact of some kollywood movies has been much wider than just in Nepal and the craze for Nepali movies and Nepali film stars is increasing these days. The first movie in Nepali language was made in 1951, released in Calcutta the movie name was Satya Harishchandra which was made by DB Pariyar’s.

Since then Nepali industry has successfully made tons of movies some of them have left a milestone. Old Nepali movies which reflect traditional beliefs, religious, rural lifestyle, are still quite popular especially among senior citizens of Nepal. Like in other film industries there are many category of movies made in Nepal like comedy, love story, action and many more each movie has its own specialty. Nepali culture, landmarks, Himalaya Mountain is often reflected through kollywood movies and movies are groomed with euphoric and pleasing music and sound track.

Many Nepali movies have been successful to win people’s heart all over the world and earn big box office collection lets have look at blockbuster kollywood movies in the recent year Kohinoor: The movie was made under Nepaa movies Pvt.Ltd's Banner. This movie stars late Shree Krishna Shrestha and his real wife Shweta Khadka.This is the highest grossing movie in Nepal till the present with the gross collection of 120 million. The movie was made with the budget of 7.5 million. Chapali height 2: This is the sequel of another hit Nepali movie chapali height. The psychological thriller movie was directed by Dipendra K Khanal. The movie is quite famous among youngster and it has successfully earned the gross collection of about 20 million in just 10 days of release. Movie was made in budget of 8 million. Chakka panja: Made in 2016 the movie is dark comedy directed by Deepa Shree Niraula.

The film received tons of positive review for its screen play humor, performance and acting and was able to make gross collection of 50 million. Loot: 2012 famous crime thriller movie loot is directed by Nischal Basnet. The movie stars emerging young talent of kollywood industry. The movie was the highest box office hit at that time with the gross collection of 25.5 million and made under budget of 5 million. Nepali film industry is emerging with the improvement in script and actor performance. In the coming years kollywood has a great scope not just in national level but also in worldwide cinema.
