What's wrong in speaking Nepali?
I am nobody to judge an individual’s choice of using language, and let me make you
clear here I am not trying to give more or less priority to any form of language. But being a
Nepali and having one of the unique languages in whole, my concern is that I don't want the
Nepali language to face the same critical situation like Sanskrit. My point is that one should love
and respect their mother tongue. We are living in the era of globalization and the English
Language symbolize that we are being globalized.
An individual must have knowledge of the English language as the standard way of communication. It doesn’t mean that one cannot be successful without the knowledge of the English language. Or the English language is not the only way of the development of a country. As language is the way to express your views, opinions, to share your opinions etc. And this is possible in your own native language, Nepali unless you want to share your views based on foreign affairs. Knowing the English language doesn't mean you are very qualified and a stranger to this language doesn’t mean an individual can be regarded as disqualified. Nowadays in my country, it is regarded that fluency in written and speaking English is one and an only great tool to get the job.
It is funnier for the vacancy of Nepali teacher for schools and colleges too, they demand fluency in speaking English. And because of my curiosity, I asked the authority why is this? The answer is nonsense: it is because all the teachers are comfortable in using English, and Nepali teachers must be. I still remember my school days, they used to fine us each rs 5 for speaking my own native language i. e Nepali language. And still the situation is the same but the fine rate is increased, now the students have to pay 20 rupees each. Again, let me remind you I am not arguing that the English language must be banned or must not be in practice. It is just language can’t be forced. Let's say if the English language is the only way that helps you to be a famous writer than possibly English people only can be renowned all over the world, but it is not so.
This can be proven by the history of Nobel Prize winners in literature. In the list, you can find many non-English writers in comparison to writers who prefer the English language in their writings. Neither use of the English language in international affairs makes you proud nor it helps your country to be developed. In many international seminars, countries like; S. Korea, China, Japan, Germany are developed as they prior to their own native language. These countries prefer to have a translator and always give a speech in their own language, and at the same time, they show respect to their native language and promote their culture through language.
Hence, English is necessary but not compulsory, use English where necessary never use to dominate non-English speakers. Let's not give importance to any language so much, who knows this is the clever way of colonization. It's not a crime to use your mother tongue while you are in your motherland and surely you are more comfortable in this. Show some respect towards your native language and try to make balance.
