Why do Nepal flood every year
We all are familiar with the fact that the monsoon rain in Nepal usually starts
in June and continues throughout September . Starting its journey as a gust of
wind from the Bay of Bengal it condenses into widespread cloud formation and
finally pours metric tons of rain all over the Himalayas. It's not much of a
rocket science but this rain lasts for several days and often ends with flash
flood in southern part of Nepal resulting in severe casualties and loss of human
lives.
Undoubtedly this is not the first time Nepal has witnessed the devastation of flood as it annually strikes this holy land and claims the lives of many people along the way. As usual heavy rainfall on July 11-12 this year took the lives of 15 people with six individuals still missing and 13 severely injured.Effects of landslides and floods spread in 32 districts mostly affecting 11 Terai districts from Province 1 and 2.Even Kathmandu (the capital city of Nepal ) was not spared as roads and buildings of KTM flooded like other ill fated cities.Unfortunately 3 people were killed due to sudden collapse of concrete wall upon a small tin cottage in Mulpani .
Water level has risen above danger mark in Koshi Barek flooding local community within Nepal .Right at the time of monsoon crops were swept away by the flood in various parts of the country. It is reported 1,76,800 peoples food security is currently affected by the recent flood . Besides, shelter and telecommunications were greatly affected not to mention water hygiene is at upright risk on this hour . Nepalese army and police force are stationed at high risked zones for rescue operations as it claims to have evacuated more than 150 people and is continuing rescue missions on highway where landslide fatalities are at its peak. The rescue teams claims for facing problems with limited resources for transportation of injured victims but the government seems to have neglected the issue day after day.
Every year ministers fly around the flooded area in private helicopters but dare not land to listen and witness devastation fed upon citizens by the flood. Not to mention neighboring nation constructs high embankment alongside their riverside .Compare this to our unplanned construction on river beds we are causing floods within our own nation. Who are we to question for this ? Should we rely on government or are their innovative ways we can implement to control the effect of flood in Nepal.
